Thoughts On: Why I Still Self Host My Servers

Thoughts

I self host several servers and one of the jobs I've had is to be responsible for hardware in a colocation. So this kinda hits home:

[Why I Still Self Host My Servers And What I've Recently Learned]https://chollinger.com/blog/2024/08/why-i-still-self-host-my-servers-and-what-ive-recently-learned/

While the author has many more services running there were some good takeaways:

  1. Software I didn't know existed

It is always interesting to get to hear about new software. There are many libraries, utilities, tools et cetera and no one knows them all. For example, Heimdall looks interesting. Jellyfin looks like a good replacement for Plex as I'm getting tired of the it forcing me to login just to see my local media. Also, I've used Nginx before and it'd be interesting to do a home based dynamic IP and host my site at my house. A little down time doesn't hurt my personal sites. Though I don't want my media servers going beyond my house. Also crowdsec looks great. I'm going to install that now.

  2. Sympathy

I've also had UPS batteries die. In fact I have a dead one at a relatives house that I'm going to fix soon. It's nice to know that I'm not the only person with that problem.

  3. Confirmation

I like when other people mention that they are using the same software that I use. It gives a confirmation that I made the correct choice.

There is another issue that is not mentioned and that is when you host servers for the benefit of others. I share my media library within my home for my family. I know if I were to pass away tomorrow it would keep working for quite a while. However, there would come a day where a hardware failure happened or a software update fails or some other issue comes up and then it would be over. No one else has the ability to maintain these servers so when that time comes, it is game over for everyone else. There is a sense of futility that comes from that idea. You can't take care of anyone after you're gone.
